"The School to Prison Pipeline,"
creation of graphs and charts with data related to today's theme.
Main Project:
In this lesson, students will read two articles: “The School-to-Prison Pipeline: A Nationwide Problem for Equal Rights” and “For More Teens, Arrests by Police Replace School Discipline” and connect the information given in these articles to current events at school and in the surrounding neighborhood. Students will use their math skills by collecting data about different crimes around the neighborhood and recent detentions, suspensions, and arrests in the school by age, gender, and race. Students will create graphs and charts with the data collected. They will also be asked to write a short summary of their findings and a plan of action that proposes a solution to the dilemma, which they will present in front of the class.
