Student Learning Activities
- Groups will have a hand drawn an image that best describes the school-to-prison pipeline system.
- A teacher committee will choose which image best represents the school-to-prison pipeline system.
- The chosen group will collaborate with art teachers to help select the best approach for the mural.
- Complete Mural and conduct a simple presentation explaining the purpose of the mural to the entire student body.
- Groups that have not been chosen to create the mural, will push to change disciplinary policy.
- Groups will read and dissect the School’s policy on discipline.
- Groups will bring suggestions that will modify policy. Suggestions will be supported by data and information acquired in previous lessons.
- Students will write letters to the principal and local administration about improvements in their school’s disciplinary policy.
- Students will present ideas in of change in the school-to-prison pipeline presentation/assembly.
Teacher Instructional Activities
- Creating a schedule for collaborating teachers and the mural group.
- Gather supplies
- Create a document that clearly states the intentions my unit and what it might accomplish. This document will be sent to each student's parent.
- Create permission slips that will allow students to stay after hours
- Monitor progress of the mural
- Advertise the presentation of the mural to the entire student body
- Help answer any questions about school policy.
- Help clarify any jargon that might be confusing to students
- Inspire unconventional thinking.
- Discuss and critique each group's letter.
- Deliver letters to school officials and other local administration.
- Combine both mural project and improvement letter project and then have students present their work to other fellow students

- Interview 2-3 students.
- Create a feedback questionnaire that is based on both letter and mural presentations.
- Feedback must be distributed to 5-10 students.
